Hey crypto addicts,

Crypto is pushing deeper into the U.S. banking system as stablecoin payments firm Rain applies to establish a national trust bank in New York. If approved, Rain National Trust Bank would provide institutional custody for digital assets and U.S. dollars, manage stablecoin reserves, and issue dollar-backed stablecoins under the GENIUS Act. The application comes just days after community banking groups sued the OCC over its framework for granting national trust charters to crypto companies, putting Rain’s move at the center of a growing regulatory battle.

Rain’s proposed bank would operate under OCC supervision but would not accept deposits, offer consumer accounts, or make commercial loans. Instead, the company wants to bring key stablecoin and custody services under a federally supervised structure, reflecting growing demand from institutions for regulated digital-asset infrastructure. Rain’s application also comes as other crypto and payments companies pursue similar trust bank charters, showing how quickly the industry is moving toward closer integration with traditional finance.

The bigger picture is that crypto’s path into the U.S. banking system is accelerating, but so is the regulatory pushback. The outcome of the OCC lawsuit could help determine how much room crypto firms have to operate under federal trust charters and how closely their activities will be aligned with traditional banking standards. Market Watch ☕

Stablecoins Go Regional

Stablecoins could be on the verge of a major adoption wave across Asia Pacific, with 46% of consumers saying they are likely to use them within the next five years. Visa’s survey of 14,250 consumers across 14 markets found that only 16% had used stablecoins during the past year, highlighting the gap between growing interest and current adoption. The strongest future-use intent came from Vietnam and India, where 67% of respondents said they were likely to use stablecoins by 2031.

Much of that interest is moving beyond crypto trading and toward everyday financial activity. Around 49% of respondents believe stablecoins could become a common way to move money across borders, while online purchases, travel and overseas shopping are also emerging as potential use cases. However, understanding remains a major hurdle, with only 6% of respondents demonstrating an accurate understanding of how stablecoins work and 38% of non-users citing fraud or scam concerns.

The bigger picture is that Asia Pacific could become one of the most important regions for stablecoin adoption as payments become increasingly digital and cross-border. Turning strong interest into real usage will depend on trusted providers, clear regulation and payment experiences that feel familiar to consumers. With Visa already building stablecoin infrastructure with banks and financial institutions, the region could play a major role in bringing digital dollars into everyday payments. Bonds Go Onchain

Tokenized real-world assets are moving deeper into traditional finance as Plume launches nBND, an onchain vault backed primarily by Fidelity’s Total Bond ETF. The underlying ETF had about $26.6 billion in assets as of June, with newer estimates putting the figure near $28 billion, giving investors blockchain-based access to a broad portfolio of fixed-income assets. Unlike many tokenized products focused on short-term Treasuries, nBND brings exposure to investment-grade, high-yield and emerging-market bonds.

The launch marks a broader push to bring more sophisticated fixed-income products onto blockchain networks. Plume says nBND is designed to provide investors with access to duration and active bond management, while its tokenized structure could make the asset more programmable and easier to integrate with onchain financial applications. Fidelity is also working with Plume on bringing additional financial products onchain, although the companies have not yet disclosed which assets could come next.

The bigger picture is that tokenization is expanding beyond simple Treasury products and into a much wider range of traditional financial assets. As major asset managers increasingly explore blockchain distribution, onchain bonds could become an important bridge between traditional capital markets and decentralized finance. Metaplanet Limits Leverage

Metaplanet is putting tighter limits on Bitcoin borrowing as its BTC treasury reaches a new milestone of 44,000 Bitcoin. The Tokyo-listed company now plans to keep roughly 85% to 90% of its assets in Bitcoin, while limiting Bitcoin-related borrowing to generally below 10% of its BTC net asset value. Most future Bitcoin purchases are expected to be funded through permanent equity rather than debt, reflecting a more cautious approach to growing its massive crypto reserve.

At the same time, Metaplanet is expanding beyond simply accumulating Bitcoin by launching a Net Interest Income Strategy designed to generate recurring cash flow. The company plans to use financing from preferred stock, bonds and Bitcoin-backed credit facilities to invest in income-producing assets, with returns expected to exceed its funding costs. Metaplanet also recently sold and repurchased Bitcoin during the third quarter to demonstrate that its reserves could be converted into cash to cover interest-bearing obligations, ultimately increasing its holdings by 1,000 BTC.

The bigger picture is that Bitcoin treasury companies are increasingly evolving into financial businesses rather than simply holding BTC on their balance sheets. Metaplanet’s strategy combines Bitcoin accumulation, income generation and financial services while trying to keep leverage under control. With 44,000 BTC now on its balance sheet, the company’s next challenge will be proving that its growing Bitcoin reserve can generate sustainable value without taking on excessive financial risk.
