Hey crypto addicts,

A major crypto-related security incident is putting customer privacy back in the spotlight. Hackers claiming responsibility for a Revolut data breach are demanding 6,000 Monero, worth around $3 million, while threatening to sell sensitive records from at least 680 customers within 24 hours. The stolen information reportedly includes identity documents, verification photos, and transaction histories.

The breach did not reportedly involve a direct attack on Revolut’s core systems or customer funds. Instead, the attackers allegedly used fraudulent requests sent through a legitimate government email domain, convincing Revolut to release customer information before the deception was discovered. The group has now chosen Monero for the ransom, a privacy-focused cryptocurrency designed to make transactions harder to trace.

The incident highlights a growing challenge for crypto and fintech platforms, where financial activity can be closely connected to real-world identities. It also shows how sensitive customer data can become a powerful target even when funds themselves remain secure.☕

Crypto Tax Rules

The U.S. House Ways and Means Committee has advanced a major crypto tax bill in a 38-5 vote, bringing digital assets closer to a dedicated federal tax framework. The Digital Asset Tax Certainty Act covers stablecoins, staking, mining, lending, transaction fees, and other crypto activity. The bill now moves toward consideration by the full House.

Among its key provisions, the bill would create a $10 de minimis exemption for certain network and transaction fees, while extending wash-sale rules to widely traded digital assets. It would also establish tax treatment for mining and staking income and create a voluntary disclosure program for taxpayers to amend previous returns. However, questions around the timing of income recognition for staking and mining rewards remain unresolved.

The committee vote comes as broader crypto legislation faces uncertainty in the Senate, where the CLARITY Act failed to advance in a 49-50 procedural vote one day earlier. Together, the developments show that U.S. crypto policy is moving on multiple tracks, with taxation progressing in the House while broader market-structure rules remain under debate.☕

Fed Shakes Markets

Global markets are reacting after the U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points, marking its first hike since July 2023. The move pushed the federal funds target range to 3.75%–4% as policymakers respond to inflation that remains above the Fed’s 2% target. Bitcoin briefly moved toward $76,000 following the decision, showing how closely crypto remains tied to shifts in monetary policy.

The Fed’s latest projections also point to the possibility of another rate increase before the end of 2026, with 16 of 18 officials expecting at least one more hike. Elevated energy prices, persistent inflation, and resilient economic activity have strengthened the case for keeping financial conditions tighter. For crypto markets, higher rates can put pressure on liquidity and risk appetite while increasing the appeal of traditional yield-bearing assets.

The decision marks a significant shift after more than three years without a rate increase and puts monetary policy back at the center of the crypto market outlook. Traders will now be watching upcoming inflation and economic data closely for clues on whether another hike is coming.☕

RWAs Enter DeFi

Tokenized real-world assets are taking another step toward becoming usable financial collateral. Aave is planning a dedicated RWA Hub on Avalanche that would allow institutions to borrow Tether’s USA₮ against eligible tokenized assets without selling their underlying positions. The move comes as the global tokenized RWA market surpasses $51 billion, with more than $3.4 billion of assets hosted on Avalanche.

The planned market will run through Aave V4’s Hub and Spoke architecture, separating RWA lending from broader markets while still providing access to shared liquidity. Potential collateral could include tokenized U.S. Treasuries, money market funds, private credit, real estate, and corporate bonds, although Aave has not yet confirmed the first assets or a launch date. USA₮, issued by Anchorage Digital Bank with support from Tether, is expected to provide the initial dollar liquidity for the market.

The announcement highlights a broader shift from simply putting traditional assets onchain toward building financial products around them. If institutions can borrow against tokenized assets without selling them, blockchain infrastructure could become more closely connected to traditional credit markets and capital management.☕
