Zcash is moving closer to a major network upgrade as the Zcash Foundation releases Zebra 7.0.0, bringing NU7 mainnet support ahead of its planned November activation. The upgrade is designed to make transactions faster by reducing block times from 75 seconds to just 25 seconds. With the activation approaching, node operators face a firm deadline to update their software and remain on the network’s main consensus chain.

The upgrade is scheduled for block 3,543,405, expected around November 5, 2026. Operators must upgrade before activation, as older Zebra 6.4.x versions are scheduled to stop functioning around November 2. Beyond faster confirmations, NU7 introduces a Network Sustainability Mechanism that temporarily removes 60% of transaction fees from circulation before gradually returning those funds through future mining rewards, with reissuance planned for around 2031.

However, the transition also brings important changes for users holding funds in Zcash’s legacy Sprout privacy pool. Those funds will become unspendable after the upgrade unless moved beforehand, making preparation especially important as the deadline approaches. While NU7 aims to improve transaction efficiency and network sustainability, its rollout will depend on operators upgrading in time and the network transitioning smoothly to the new consensus rules. Solana is taking another step toward long-term network security with Quantumglow, a proposed upgrade designed to protect its consensus mechanism against future quantum-computing threats. The proposal builds on Alpenglow, Solana’s newly activated consensus protocol, which aims to reduce transaction finality from around 12.8 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds. The challenge now is to preserve that speed while strengthening the network’s defenses against emerging cryptographic risks.

Developed by Anza researchers, Quantumglow proposes replacing vulnerable elliptic-curve cryptography with hash-based digital signatures and changing how validators authenticate blocks and confirm agreement. Because post-quantum signatures can be significantly larger, the design introduces methods to prepare cryptographic material in advance and reduce the amount of data transmitted during consensus. These changes aim to improve security without sacrificing Alpenglow’s performance advantages.

However, Quantumglow remains a research proposal, with no confirmed deployment date. Its development reflects a broader industry effort to prepare blockchains for a future in which sufficiently powerful quantum computers could threaten existing cryptographic systems. While that threat is not yet an established capability of current quantum hardware, Solana’s approach highlights how blockchain developers are beginning to address security risks well before they become urgent.
